Financial abuse and intransigence at Malawi's Netball Association
Netball Association of Malawi is operating without any supervision, review and monitoring of its financial transactions, Netball Association president Rose Chinunda confirmed to the Times newspaper.
It has emerged that since 2009, Netball Association of Malawi has failed to produce annual financial reports. At the previous Annual General Assembly in 2013, the association tried to present a sketchy financial report which was rejected as it had discrepancies.
Delegates then had agreed that a new full report that reflected the dealings at Netball Association should be produced and presented at an Extra-ordinary General Assembly. This assembly has not been called to-date.
Lawyer and netball fan Wesley Namasala told the Times that for the sake of transparency and accountability Netball Association should produce the financial report.
Netball Association president Rose Chinunda said they were preparing the financial report, but could not explain why it is taking this long.
Ironically, the association says it does not have money to call for a general assembly.
Netball Association last month failed to send the national team to the a tournament in Botswana due to financial problems. For the past years it has been fighting with players who had not been allowances. Top shooter Mwai Kumwenda was disciplined in relation to this matter.
Malawi Council of Sports is supposed to provide oversight but has not dealt with problems at the netball association.
