Malawi civil service union calls off nationwide strike
Malawi civil servants have now called off the nationwide strike that has been going on for the past two weeks after agreeing to a deal with the government.
No details of the deal have been given, but reports indicate the increment will be effective January 1, 2013.
Malawi president left for west Africa on Thursday aboard a private jet. On Wednesday all the airports were closed and many more civil service unions joined the strike.
Medical doctors joined the on-going public sector strike on Thursday.
“We the medical doctors in government fully support the action that our fellow civil servants have taken...hence our decision to participate fully in the action,” said spokesperson Dr Nkambule said in a statement.
But he was quick to say they will maintain skeleton staff to deal with emergency cases in different public hospital across the country.
