Section 65 starts to bite, Bangwe MP Henry Shaba thrown out of parliament

Speaker of Malawi parliament declared vacant the seat of Blantyre Bangwe MP Henry Shaba for crossing the floor. Shaba left UDF to join then ruling party the DPP.

The UDF had also wanted the speaker to declare vacant the seat of Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola but the speaker said Matola needs to be heard first as he is out of the country and was not served with a notice.

Two other MPs Shamil Asibu and Alfred Mwechumu have also escaped the wrath of Section 65 for now because Shaibu was not served with a notice while Mwechumu obtained a court injunction.

Meanwhile, the speaker is waiting on the progress of court cases before he declares vacant seats of several lawmakers who quit DPP to join the ruling People's Party soon after Bingu wa Mutharika died.

Some of these MPs in the DPP have crossed the floor three times in the past two years.
