Catholic bishop Mkhori dies

Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Right Reverend Felix Eugenio Mkhori, died on Saturday, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has announced.

ECM said in a statement Mkhori will be buried on Wednesday in Chikhwawa.

"The Right Reverend Felix Eugenio Mkhori passed away early this morning (27th October, 2012) at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre, having been admitted to the same hospital on Saturday, 13th October, 2012," reads the statement posted on ECM website and signed by general secretary Father George Buleya.

The statement did not say what has claimed the bishop’s life.

Bishop Mkhori was born on August 24, 1931, and was ordained priest on September 8, 1961. He was consecrated bishop on January 8, 1978.

He served as bishop of Chikhwawa until 2001 when he became bishop of the Diocese of Lilongwe. He retired from the pastoral office in 2007.

At the time of his death, Mkhori lived at St. Montfort in Chikhwawa.

Mkhori was one of the authors of the 1992 Pastoral Letter that fanned the wind of change for multiparty democracy in Malawi. His latest spotlight moment came in October 2011 when he was appointed by the late president Bingu wa Mutharika to head the commission of inquiry into the July 20 demonstrations.
