Football Association boss Nyamilandu in fatal car accident, fiancee, aunt dead

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu was involved in a serious car accident at Phalula in Balaka that claimed two lives including his fiancee Maria Inglis and an aunt.

Inglis was pronounced died on arrival at Balaka District Hospital while the aunt passed on a few hours later at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre.

Nyamilandu, his deceased fiancee, his two sons and two other relations were travelling to Lilongwe in a family vehicle Nissan Pathfinder, registration number NB 7100.

According to Balaka Police public relations officer Joseph Sauka, the accident occurred at around 11am at a place called Chitale between Phalula and Senzani along the M1 Road when the FAM president—who was behind the wheel— was trying to avoid a Siku truck that had protruding load.

"It would appear Mr. Nyamilandu was trying to avoid the truck when he lost control and overturned. One of the women [Inglis] sustained serious injuries and died at Balaka Hospital," said Sauka.

He said Nyamilandu sustained bruises on his right hand.

According to an eye-witness, Nyamilandu’s aunt and one of his sons identified as eight-year-old Alista, suffered serious injuries.

"The son suffered a serious cut on the head while Nyamilandu’s aunt was also seriously injured," said the eye-witness.

Nyamilandu and the other casualties were later rushed to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre.

Nyamilandu was escorting his departed fiancee to Kamuzu International Airport where she was to board a plane to China on a private trip.

Thereafter, he was supposed to grace the K20 million (about $68 000) Standard Bank Knockout Cup semi-final game between Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.
