Bunda College closes indefinitely, as students want Principal Kwapata out

Bunda College of Agriculture in Lilongwe, a constituent college of the new Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) indefinitely closed on Friday to pave way for the resolution of the impasse between the students and the college’s leadership.

Students at the college have been boycotting classes demanding the removal of their Principal Moses Kwapata whom they accuse of unprofessional conduct.

Part of the problem lies in the dispute where students want to graduate with University of Malawi degrees instead of the LUANAR.

The students obtained an injunction restraining the college’s management and that of LUANAR to close the college, but the injunction has since been vacated the management.

LUANAR said the volatile situation at Bunda College was preventing investigations in the allegations of poor management by the head of the college.

“Once peace returns, the University of Malawi Council will carry out investigations to establish the truth of the matter on behalf of LUANAR,” said LUANAR Chairperson Zac Kasomekera.

Kasomekera says they are planning to consult their counterparts at the University of Malawi Council to carry out the investigations on the matter.

“The University of Malawi Council will carry out the investigations because LUANAR council is not fully operational,” said Kasomera.

The University of Malawi Council will have to work on behalf of LUANAR because the latter is yet to be fully established. Bunda College was until recently one college of the University of Malawi.

The LUANAR council chairperson added, “Death of a lecturer at Bunda College early this week forced the college authorities to shift their attention from the issue at hand.”

The strike at Bunda started last week but the college head has stayed put, saying he cannot resign because the students have no grounds in the accusations against him.

Reports are rife that the government will not renew Bunda College principal’s contract but instead he will accorded a new position as Vice Chancellor of LUANAR.

The post of Vice Chancellor though has been advertised and is open to anyone.
