Germany supports health sector with €14 million

Germany has pledged €14 million (~K5 billion), to Malawi as part of the health care pool fund and for acceleration of funds disbursement under the Social Cash Transfer Scheme.

The announcement comes ahead of the visit Berlin's Parliamentary State Secretary Ms Gundrun Kopp next month.

The financing measures include resumption of disbursements to the health sector pool fund amounting K1.4 billion.

An additional funding amounting K3.3 billion has also been set aside to speed up disbursement of funds under the Social Cash Transfer Scheme.

“These measures will help to improve Malawi's balance of payment position and enhance the availability of foreign exchange required for the import of essential commodities and the compliance with international obligations,” indicates a statement issued by the Germany Embassy in Lilongwe on Monday.

Among other things Ms Kopp’s entourage is expected to deliberate with Malawi officials on several aid package measures to be provided by the Germany government.

The Germany government has since commended recent economic reforms by Malawi government saying it wishes to continue supporting Malawi in tackling the economic and political challenges ahead.
