Malawi reverts to the old flag
Malawi parliament has today voted to revert to using the old flag in a move that was widely expected.
Mutharika changed the flag against the will of the people in 2010 after winning a landslide in the 2009 general elections. The flag change was just one of the many excesses of Mutharika's second term where he abused and fronted the traditional chiefs to implement self-aggrandisement projects.
"Malawi's original flag was a black, red and green colour composition with the rising sun imposed on the black strip. The black strip symbolised the colour of the people of Africa; the red symbolised the blood African sons and daughters lost while fighting for independence; the green symbolised the generally green environment of Africa while the rising sun symbolised hope for Malawians".
Malawians did not only detest the change of the flag by Mutharika but they also considered his flag to be ugly.
Joyce Banda, Malawi's new president is expected to reverse many of the bad policies that Mutharika implemented. She has already asked parliament to repeal several bad laws.
