Joseph Mwanamvekha, the Treasury Chief and protégé of late Mutharika is fired

Joseph Mwanamvekha has been fired as secretary to the treasury in a continued shake up that is expected to continue affect the government machinery now that a new President in charge of affairs.

According to a statement from Office of President and Cabinet, President Joyce Banda has replaced Mwanamvekha with Mr. Radson Mwadiwa, who once also served in that position.

It is not know whether Mwanamveka will return to Malawi Savings Bank where he was Chief Executive. However, with his track record at the Treasury, that position might also elude him.

Also replaced in the treasury is the budget director Dr. Dalitso Kababe but the name of the one who has replaced him was not immediately available.

Minister of Finance Ken Lipenga also confirmed the changes but could not give reasons.

“Yes he has been moved together with budget director Dr. Dalitso Kabambe but am yet to find out why and where they are going,” said Lipenga who is also expected to loose his job as minister of finance.

Mwananvekha of late came under heavy criticism from the civil service over his style of leadership.

At some point civil service trade union threatened to strike to force his re deployment.

He largely believed to be a protégé of late President Mutharika. He also chairs the Mulakho wa Alhomwe heritage group founded by the late President.

Mwananvekha becomes the fourth top government official to be fired since Saturday when the new President was sworn in.

Mwanamveka was part of Bingu's second term economic team that managed to bring the economy to its knees after years of growth. The other persons were the Central bank governor Perks Ligoya, former Finance Minister Kandodo and in recent months Finance Minister Lipenga.

Other casualties are flamboyant Information Minister Patricia Kaliati replaced by Moses Kunkuyu, Police Chief Peter Mukhito replaced by Commissioner Loti Dzonzi, and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Director Bright Malopa replaced by Benson Tembo.
