Air Malawi remains grounded
The beleaguered national flag carrier, Air Malawi remains grounded after failing to get new airplane to operate on the Johannesburg route.
Air Malawi CEO Francis Chilambe hopes the situation will improve once a new aircraft is leased and he expect it should be in Malawi before end of this year. Previously he had said it should be in Malawi before December 1.
Chilambe says the delay in acquiring a new plane was caused by Malawi government which is the main shareholder. Malawi government though is almost insolvent as it struggles to get forex for many of its necessities including fuel.
The cash strapped Air Malawi suspended flights on 16th November this year after struggling for many years and management and government have failed to come up with a good plan to make it a viable business.
